Stand Up

As a child, I accepted as given that our country was the greatest the world had ever seen. Of course there were problems, and my parents discussed some of them over the dinner table. However, I was almost an adult before I realized there were other countries that might be more progressive and more egalitarian than ours. Later still I realized that this was almost certainly true, considering that most of the history we had been taught in grade school had been whitewashed. Now, I see our country spiraling downwards, with no end in sight. This too shall pass, I believe, though I might not see it. For now, we all have to be strong and keep our eyes open.

So far, this year doesn't seem so bad. Helped eat a home-cooked brunch, did a couple of half-hearted exercises, comforted the puppy when scary noises emanated from the kitchen, and noted that we're being irradiated by a gigantic nuclear furnace. This is fine. Oh, and 19 more days of living in a democracy.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Well, gotta savor it to the last drop, beginning with the horrific mass killing in NOLA this morning. I wish all the best to survivors and grieving family and friends. But this is not enough. The police were warned, and yet not prepared. When an F150 can simply drive around your barricade, you're doing it wrong. But the problems in the world today are far beyond the capability of city police to handle. Whatever needs to be done to reduce misery and violence, we're not doing it. I hope to do my part a little better this year.

I'll be back to the subjects of reading and writing soon.
